Learn New Vocabulary! Often!

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

Building a strong vocabulary has numerous benefits besides the obvious of sounding erudite in group conversations and flexing your extensive knowledge of the English language. In fact, recent research indicates that vocabulary is central to language teaching and is essential to the full understanding of the entire language.

Vocabulary shapes your communication. Having good vocabulary enhances the ability to use precise language and communicate with greater clarity and efficacy. It may seem paradoxical that being equipped with more complex words makes communication seem simpler, but the truth is that knowing more words makes it easier to understand the precise and exact meaning of each word, enabling you to become better at conversation.

Drills/Techniques to Improve your Vocabulary

Good news! Improving your vocabulary is much simpler than pouring hours of your life into reading and memorizing the dictionary. Rather, more efficient and easy methods exist, these include learning the roots of words, using a thesaurus when writing essays, reading every day, keeping a journal, making associations, and visualizing new words. Making synonym word lists is also an absolutely fantastic way to improve word association and more precise writing, as it forces students to improve upon their writing by thinking of as many potential words that could be used in place of the one they are using currently. Another great method is to read a simple passage and adding adjectives and adverbs that could effectively “spice” up the writing while maintaining the simplicity of the message. Other examples include taking writing classes that encourage use of different more complex readings and writings and analyzing those passages in depth, therefore inspiring a more profound understanding of the words and the overall message of the writing.
